A Comparison of the Psychological Processes and Behavioral Manifestations of Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa

An 18 page discussion of the etiologies and causes of these types of eating disorders. Describes each condition noting the frequency of its occurrence. Emphasizes that the impact of these conditions can range from maladaptive social behavior to severe physical consequence, even death. Differences in cognitive processing mechanisms are believed to exist between those that suffer from conditions such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa and the general population. While anorexia is ego-syntonic from the cognitive perspective, bulimia is ego-dystonic. Both conditions, however, involve negative automatic thoughts, dysfunctional assumptions and core beliefs.
